I am going to tell you the truth. For much of my life, I lived inside a contradiction I couldn’t explain. I excelled easily yet, in certain moments, was just as easily undone. For relief, my go-to was escape. Maybe the “next” would be better. Later in my career when I stopped running, the contradiction became impossible to ignore.

I was highly trained, experienced, producing prolifically at speed and scale under impossible demands—and desperately fighting to stay. Others could see the brilliance, but the internal cost of staying remained in the dark.

There is a profound isolation in knowing people cannot enter into the internal clawing to hold back while they stare puzzled on the outside, as though my reactions were a moral failing or lack of effort. I felt trapped inside a pattern I didn’t understand and seemingly couldn’t change, despite everything I knew and tried.

God, I tried. Then I stopped. I started listening differently to the experiences that other talented colleagues had already been sharing when it dawned on me: I wasn’t the only one. I noticed echoes of it in the broader cultural conversation as well. Something else was at play here, something that went beyond knowledge, skill, talent, or effort. So I started asking, what if?

What if I could preserve my power to choose in those spike moments? What if I could be fully human without being overtaken by the reaction? What if I could take all I was capable of and excel—anywhere?

The answer ultimately became SteadyState.
